Overall objective of the project

Anticoagulant rodenticides (AK) are rodenticides that are subject to authorisation in the European Union in accordance with Biocidal Products Regulation (EU) No. 528/2012. The 2nd generation AK are so-called PBT substances. They are persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic, i.e. they pose a high environmental risk. For this reason, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) decides every five years whether to re-authorise the AK. All new scientific findings are collated for this purpose. Authorisation is linked to suitable risk reduction measures. Research into these options and their implementation must be supported by all EU countries. This requires joint efforts in research with other EU countries, which then have a direct impact on ECHA's decisions and also on German authorisation practice for rodent control. This can only be realised on the basis of monitoring data that reflect the diversity of European conditions. The RaRoSlo project is investigating the exposure of birds of prey as a result of primary or secondary poisoning after habitual use of anticoagulant rodenticides. This project offers the unique opportunity to investigate exposure to AK in birds of prey in Slovenia and to compare this with exposure data from Germany. In addition, it is intended to find out in which organs AK accumulate in birds of prey.
