The arable pilot farm (“Leitbetrieb Ackerbau”) is a systems trial to investigate strategies for implementing the principles of BMEL’s arable farming strategy under field conditions. The aim of the cultivation system is to achieve stable yields and incomes, to meet crop the challenges of arable farming, to conserve resources and to minimise risks to water, climate and biodiversity. The opportunities and trade-offs of the pilot farm system can be addressed by implementing a range of measures in the areas of soil, crop diversity, fertilisation, crop protection, plant breeding and climate adaptation and mitigation, and education and farming advisory. The pilot farm consists of field trials with large plots managed according to defined management principles and continuously sampled as part of a basic investigation strategy. Other projects with different focuses can be integrated into the pilot farm trial.
