Overall objective of the project

The overall objective of the project is the development of a push-pull-kill strategy against Pentastiridius leporinus, which acts as a vector for both the proteobacterium Candidatus Arsenophonus phytopathogenicus and the phytoplasma Candidatus Phytoplasma solani and transmits the disease SBR to sugar beet.In the joint project PentaKILL, the focus will be on the selection and evaluation of repellents (JKI) and non-volatile deterrents (GAU) to prevent the sucking/egg laying of adult sugar beet planthoppers and on the selection and evaluation of attractants to lure the planthoppers. Furthermore, suitable kill components will be identified and used as a basis for a possible push-pull-kill strategy. The substances identified will be formulated in the Patel working group (Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences) and tested in collaboration with the company Biocare. In addition to the control strategy for adult planthoppers, methods for controlling nymphs in the soil will also be developed, such as finding attract and kill components, testing an ATTRACAP prototype or testing liquid formulations.
