Institut für Züchtungsforschung an Obst
The aim of the project is to establish a research structure for the development, conservation and sustainable use of fruit genetic resources in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, linking various stakeholders from science and industry as well as various non-governmental organizations. As a first step, the two newly founded institutes for the protection of ecosystems and biodiversity in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan are to be set up as national coordination centers. Such centers are suitable for providing an umbrella for ongoing projects in the respective countries. Their main aim is to network all national players, coordinate their activities, collect existing knowledge and make it accessible to a broad user group. Through the institutes, contacts are to be established with the international scientific community, research funding acquired and the need to preserve biodiversity integrated into the national consciousness. As a result of their work, a research structure is to be created that offers numerous advantages to all partners. It opens up the possibility of, I. a joint and targeted development of fruit genetic resources, II. the identification of common research interests, III. the exchange of knowledge and experience and IV. the acquisition of national and international research funds. This structure would make it easier for the German partners to access fruit genetic resources from their regions of origin (gene centers). The Kazakh and Kyrgyz partners would have access to the European research landscape, the opportunity to use state-of-the-art methods of plant genetics, plant breeding and biodiversity research as well as the chance to be integrated into international networks for the conservation of plant genetic resources. This partnership therefore offersng points for further and sustainable cooperation.
