In September, the global wheat community looked to Perth, Australia, where the 3rd International Wheat Congress (IWC) brought together more than 900 participants from over 50 countries - leading experts, researchers, policymakers, and industry professionals. The event was hosted by Murdoch University and organised in close partnership with the International Wheat Initiative (WI), based at the JKI, and the Grains Research & Development Corporation (GRDC).

A special event prior to IWC was dedicated to wheat pathogens. JKI researchers from the Institute of Resistance Research and Stress Tolerance took an active part in the discussion on future research needs, including three presentations:
- Albrecht Serfling: High-throughput evaluation of unknown rust resistances in genetic resources of wheat
- Claudia Breitkreuz: Modelling plant-pathogen-interactions across different environments (RustHealth)
- Jasper Krößmann: Assessing Leaf Rust Resistance in Wheat under Elevated C02: lnsights from Greenhouse and Field Studies
"This International Wheat Congress in Perth is a great success, as it met the Wheat Initiative's aim of uniting, exchanging knowledge, and cultivating collaborations to ensure the resilience and productive future of wheat, which is critical for global food security," said Frank Ordon, Chair of the WI Research Committee and President of the Julius Kuehn Institute, the Federal Research Centre for Cultivated Plants in Germany.
